The only div 4 team to DNF Bruce has called an end to their race. After a difficult start where Bruce saw themself off track partially Bush-bashing and on difficult and unpredicted terrain for 5 hours in the early hours of the morning they got themselves back on course. Johns 4, who earlier went solo and took the eastern route has seen this decision play in their favour. This route saw the least meters but the most elevation with an insane 2624m climbed. Perhaps with stronger climbing legs than the other teams they caught back up and slotted into the field before Wright and Wamba are able to finish. A very tight finish for div 4 and a strong effort from Johns with three first time runners… Read more.

Wamburun 4 have made the surprising decision to turn left and go out of Majors Creek, and are right at the edge of an exclusion zone. It's a decision that makes no sense, because they have all the information to know where they are, except for one thing... on the 2025 course maps, the underlying coordinate grid is not aligned with the rectangular page because the pages are aligned to magnetic north. If you plot the coordinates of EP but assume the rectangular grid is aligned with the page, it's plausible that you think EP is exactly where Wamburun was 10 minutes ago. EP Approach Exclusion Zone Problems

A number of teams seem to have been having issues with navigating the last kilometres to endpoint. From the east, Unilodge 7, Yukeembruk 7 and The Fast and the Furriest seem to have strayed west of the dashed path they need to follow to avoid private property. Meanwhile, from the south, Burgmann 4 apparently missed the turnoff onto Majors Creek Mountain Road and continued into the excluded area of Araluen Road, but they turned back and are back in the Araluen township where the roads diverge… Read more.

A costly endgame blunder

B&G 5 have appeared to go a little bit off course on the Endpoint approach, which might not always be so much of an issue... but in the time it's taken them to backtrack, they've lost around 30 minutes and been passed by both Griffin 5 and Fenner 5. There aren't any Div 5 teams close on their tails (other than Loughton's Lopers on the southern approach if they take a real long time), but every extra minute also decreases their potential score in the end… Read more.

Johns adding metres to the heat map with a different decision from the lead pack. Araluen road would see a descent followed by a reasonably flat finish for the team, however Johns have opted to stay high in the range for longer before their descent. I spoke to Div X(2) Old Fenner and Bruce 3 in isolation before the race. 10 hours into the race and division 4 condensed and powering. The majority of the teams have conquered the heavy elevation that the early kms provided and are descending down Araluen road across to the footrace finish. Griffin led by head coach Hannah Vardy and Bng with their coaches Grace and Tom have run a calm race with deliberate navigation allowing them to hold their lead. Although they may have wet feet (with 10 river crossings in a 3km segment) their route choice has set them up to do hundreds of meters less elevation than their competition - assuming they continue along Araluen road. Jack has been convinced to be wheeled out of retirement for (at least) one more round of IB live commentary. Despite only having ran IB once in 2019 (practically ancient history), he for some reason feels entitled enough to rashly judge runners route choices snappily labelling them terms like suboptimal. Missed turns and herd mentality

Three Div 5 teams appear to have gone the wrong way at a fork and then thought better of it. SexyDivXy, who were charging it up towards the Corn Trail checkpoint, missed the turnoff to head up to No Name Mountain Road but managed to correct losing only about 20 minutes. Wamburun 5, who initially looked like they were going to follow SexyDivXy up towards Corn Trail, have also turned around back on to Quark Pot Road, but have maybe lost closer to 30 minutes. Finally, Yukeembruk 5 initially turned up Bolaro Mountain Road back in the direction of drop site again after rejoining from Gully Road, but have turned around to chase behind the herd (but are seriously behind the main pack!)… Read more.

With road signs covered the three-way intersection and plethora of intersecting roads should inform teams of their whereabouts after a concentrated scout. Alex spent his formative running years with Bruce Hall’s IB team, with his most notable and only commendation as the head navigator for their division 6 team in 2024, helping bring home the win for the now famous year of the dragon. A self-described IB addict, Jacob has been planning to commentate since he arrived at endpoint last year. A three time runner and coach at Bruce Hall (BEST HALL!), he finally has given up running the event (for now at least) and has moved on, though only as far as committee. Serving as one of the Mock Safety Officers in 2025, Jacob is bringing the safety first mindset to the commentating team (just kidding, he wants to see as many bad bush-bashes as possible!).
