Early Morning Observations

Rise and Shine! Here are a couple of quirky route developments you might have missed since you've been asleep.

Firstly, the Corn Trail has claimed victims with a hard-to-see entrance that many teams have missed. Although the real judge of character in IB is what you do when you get lost.

BnG 6 missed the first turnoff, but are pulling of a (potentially) legendary bushbash to get back onto Corn Trail. Lets see if they stick the landing.

Meanwhile, BnG 5, ADFA 5, Green Avenue, and Felix's Team have missed both turnoffs, and are venturing into the unknown (there is no viable route option this way).

Finally, in a weird turn of circumstances, Bruce 1 and Ursies 4 are going to pass each other on the same trail (they are both lost).

After choosing the more challenging route, Ursies pushed hard to stay in the race. Tackling the corn trail they hit hard un-runnable ground which limited their ability to stay competitive with the other southern route teams. 10 hours into the race and division 4 condensed and powering. The majority of the teams have conquered the heavy elevation that the early kms provided and are descending down Araluen road across to the footrace finish. Griffin led by head coach Hannah Vardy and Bng with their coaches Grace and Tom have run a calm race with deliberate navigation allowing them to hold their lead. The now infamous corn trail has been attempted by only one div 4 team. Tactical? perhaps, Risky? more likely. The corn trail a snaking single trail touted as "unrunnable" by our course setters is a risky move by Ursies however inevitable once they committed to their northern route. Much like RFK Jr B&G Div 3 dislike Corn (even when not in fizzy drinks), with them the only div 3 team avoiding the corn trail, will this pay off, who knows (the predictor thinks not). After experiencing the three hallmarks of racing Inward Bound: first the “we got so lost a rescue car was the only way out”, second the “at least we made it to the finish”, and then finally the “look at my mug!!”. What's the Deal With ShoeBridge Track?

The second half of Div 5 and 4 sees colleges make the choice between a safe wide firetail (north), or the single-track "Shoebridge" to the west. Jack has been convinced to be wheeled out of retirement for (at least) one more round of IB live commentary. Despite only having ran IB once in 2019 (practically ancient history), he for some reason feels entitled enough to rashly judge runners route choices snappily labelling them terms like suboptimal. Because it's been so long since he ran he might just be religiously listening to the opinions of the predictor algorithm (he created for last year's edition, with mild improvements for 2025) making them effectively the Statler and Waldorf of the commentary team… Read more.

With road signs covered the three-way intersection and plethora of intersecting roads should inform teams of their whereabouts after a concentrated scout. Long term resident first time commentator. Alex spent his formative running years with Bruce Hall’s IB team, with his most notable and only commendation as the head navigator for their division 6 team in 2024, helping bring home the win for the now famous year of the dragon. With an encore year as a committee member, Alex is looking to upgrade IB’s pool of armchair commentators, by making absurd predictions about colleges he’s never lived in. A self-described IB addict, Jacob has been planning to commentate since he arrived at endpoint last year. A three time runner and coach at Bruce Hall (BEST HALL!), he finally has given up running the event (for now at least) and has moved on, though only as far as committee. Serving as one of the Mock Safety Officers in 2025, Jacob is bringing the safety first mindset to the commentating team (just kidding, he wants to see as many bad bush-bashes as possible!). He is also part of the team behind IB TV & has spent weeks poring over the route choices, analysing each one on Strava to determine the ideal option.
