Division 4

After experiencing the three hallmarks of racing Inward Bound: first the “we got so lost a rescue car was the only way out”, second the “at least we made it to the finish”, and then finally the “look at my mug!!”. Mirah has decided to turn her professional ability to yap and keen noseyness of ANU Stravas to the IB live comment section. After a year of staring at the 2024 nav shield - won by her housemate that’s why it’s in her living room - her insights come from a new found and unearned belief in her navigation opinions. Get keen for some enthusiastic but maybe very wrong predictions!!!

After an extremely difficult day out division 4 is completed - with route options touted on ib live as the most difficult for the expected divisional difficulty div 4 was a massive challenge. Particular kudos to all divisions for completing >2000m of elevation over their 60-70kms… Read more.

Ursies 4 DNF

After choosing the more challenging route, Ursies pushed hard to stay in the race. Tackling the corn trail they hit hard un-runnable ground which limited their ability to stay competitive with the other southern route teams. Bruce 4 DNF

The only div 4 team to DNF Bruce has called an end to their race. After a difficult start where Bruce saw themself off track partially Bush-bashing and on difficult and unpredicted terrain for 5 hours in the early hours of the morning they got themselves back on course. Bruce impressively worked their way back into the field making no more major nav errors and pushing into end point. An impressive effort from a team with three first timers. … Read more.

Johns 4, who earlier went solo and took the eastern route has seen this decision play in their favour. This route saw the least meters but the most elevation with an insane 2624m climbed. Perhaps with stronger climbing legs than the other teams they caught back up and slotted into the field before Wright and Wamba are able to finish. A very tight finish for div 4 and a strong effort from Johns with three first time runners… Read more.

Wrong Endpoint?

Wamburun 4 have made the surprising decision to turn left and go out of Majors Creek, and are right at the edge of an exclusion zone. It's a decision that makes no sense, because they have all the information to know where they are, except for one thing... on the 2025 course maps, the underlying coordinate grid is not aligned with the rectangular page because the pages are aligned to magnetic north. If you plot the coordinates of EP but assume the rectangular grid is aligned with the page, it's plausible that you think EP is exactly where Wamburun was 10 minutes ago. Ursies and Bruce are racing the clock into endpoint from opposite sides of the map. Bruce being held up by their creative cut through they have been steadily pushing along the southern route. EP Approach Exclusion Zone Problems

A number of teams seem to have been having issues with navigating the last kilometres to endpoint. From the east, Unilodge 7, Yukeembruk 7 and The Fast and the Furriest seem to have strayed west of the dashed path they need to follow to avoid private property. Meanwhile, from the south, Burgmann 4 apparently missed the turnoff onto Majors Creek Mountain Road and continued into the excluded area of Araluen Road, but they turned back and are back in the Araluen township where the roads diverge… Read more.

Johns taking the long way?

Johns adding metres to the heat map with a different decision from the lead pack. Araluen road would see a descent followed by a reasonably flat finish for the team, however Johns have opted to stay high in the range for longer before their descent. With a critical exclusion zone ahead adding kms to their route hopefully they are aware. Unlikely this decision will pay off for Johns, time will tell… Read more.

10 hours into the race and division 4 condensed and powering. The majority of the teams have conquered the heavy elevation that the early kms provided and are descending down Araluen road across to the footrace finish. Griffin led by head coach Hannah Vardy and Bng with their coaches Grace and Tom have run a calm race with deliberate navigation allowing them to hold their lead. However, a tight and strong field of YKB, Wam, Fenner, Burg and Wright follow closely behind leaving the podium in questionJohns has made a risky move and forked and Bruce continues heading towards endpoint moving well after their initial confusion… Read more.

The now infamous corn trail has been attempted by only one div 4 team. Tactical? perhaps, Risky? more likely. The corn trail a snaking single trail touted as "unrunnable" by our course setters is a risky move by Ursies however inevitable once they committed to their northern route. Redemption for Burgman

Despite their shaky start Burgman have reconnected with the rest of the competition (bar our northern friends ursies). Although they may have wet feet (with 10 river crossings in a 3km segment) their route choice has set them up to do hundreds of meters less elevation than their competition - assuming they continue along Araluen road. Head navigated by Emily Bannister she had made excellent decisions to get Burgmann back on track … Read more.

The second half of Div 5 and 4 sees colleges make the choice between a safe wide firetail (north), or the single-track "Shoebridge" to the west. The advantage of the track is that whilst the inital turnoff is hard to find, and a bit steep, it eventually flattens out for a long run to endpoint… Read more.

The Division 4 drop has begun with the most split route choice of the upper divisions. With road signs covered the three-way intersection and plethora of intersecting roads should inform teams of their whereabouts after a concentrated scout.
