Div 2 Drop

Division 2

Not so Plain Sailing?

The Div 2 drop is located in a patch of forest along Jones Plain Rd, otherwise surrounded by farmland. It will be a tactical decision for how much of the 55-minute scout time these teams use. If they use a lot of it a northbound scout might reach a bridge over a creek but otherwise teams will be picking drop-off road shape and surrounding terrain alone.

Teams however hopefully should decide to head north towards Bobyean Rd rather than take the long way south to Shannons Flat Road costing an extra 5km or about 45 minutes of running at least they won't have to turn around and head back through drop.

Challenges Ahead

I think the most challenging route choice should come when teams reach the first Boboyan Rd/Old Boboyan Intersection near Mt Clear Campground (Div 5's Drop site). Here they have to choose whether to head up Naas Valley Firetrail to avoid the Boboyan Rd exclusion zone or go via Kennedy's Rd and then heading to EP from the west along the Australian Alps Walking Track the algorithm suggests the Naas Valley is marginally quicker (~3 minutes) but that doesn't account for it's 2 compulsory bushes occurring at booth crossings of Boboyan road which may deter teams from this option.

A Bush Bash Possibility

The Most intriguing option is to bush bash around the exclusion zone this saves around 8km of distance and looks not too technical but will depend on any team's attempting it to stay on track through the trees and get over the saddle south of Mt Gudgenby without accidentally climbing a knoll. Teams may also avoid this if they have strong running legs as it is challenging to move at top speed when you haven't got a trail.

The algorithm doesn't know there isn't a road here, but even with me making the bush bash route go over the top of Mount Gudengby (to compensate for it being slower travelling) it thinks this is a little quicker (~10 mins). Time will tell if any team will be brave enough to try it and whether in this case fortune will favour the brave.
