Division 2

Division 2 - Jones Plain Road (-36.017639, 148.958944)

Drop time: 10:00pm

Scout time: 55 mins

With the longest scout time out of all the Divisions, these teams will have plenty of time to attempt to locate themselves. Will this be enough? Does this additional time imply Division 2 has a difficult Dropsite? Let’s take a look.

Dropped on Jones Plain Road near the southern end of the course area, Division 2 should suspect that they are on an orange solid-line road. The area directly surrounding dropsite has plenty of vegetation, another key clue. The Dropsite itself is on a relatively significant slope.

Scouts who run west will head downhill and encounter a number of driveways and thin dirt tracks, as well as some distinctive bends, including one about 2.5km away from Dropsite that crosses a creek and passes buildings. Parts of the vegetation will give way to clear fields. This should be enough information for scouts to return confidently without needing to utilise the full scout time.

Scouts who run east have the flatter route (lucky them!) and will quickly encounter a significant 90 degree bend to their left. The vegetation is a lot more open in this direction. Runners may be able to see the lights of cars travelling down Shannons Flat Road.

With this information, teams should have enough information to pick Dropsite accurately. The largest potential challenge associated with this location is that there are a few roads near Dropsite that are unmarked on the map, particularly to the west of Dropsite. This may lead teams astray (and is a good reminder that roads are not gold-standard features in navigation - these man-made constructions are far more liable to change and thus are less reliable than geographical features).

Luckily for Division 2 teams, even if they don’t quite pick Dropsite, neither route out of Dropsite is race-ending, though leaving dropsite towards the west is the better choice. Once teams hit either Bobeyan Road or Shannons Flat Road, signage should allow them to locate themselves with ease.
