Division 5

Division 5 - Mt Clear Campground (-35.861446, 149.001867)

Drop time: approximately 3:05am (this will be updated)

Scout time: 11 mins

Division 5 have just finished a very logistically-challenging Dropsite approach - they got off the bus at the Boboyan Road intersection and were then shuttled to their Dropsite at Mt Clear Campground one kilometre down the road. The journey wasn’t over there, though - participants were then led, blindfolded, deep into the campground away from the access road. This should add to the challenge!

At Dropsite, Division 5 teams will instantly notice that they’re not just on a road in the middle of nowhere. They’re at a campground, so they may see picnic benches, fire pits, or other signs that people have used the area for camping. They may also see see signs around Dropsite - these signs have been covered, so runners will not be able to glean any information from text or images on them, but the very presence of signs should be a big clue for teams. Even if the signs were not covered, Mt Clear Campground is not named on the map - teams who correctly identify that they are at a campground will still have to work hard to locate themselves.

Perhaps the most obvious feature at dropsite is the presence of a public toilet. This year, for the first time, most public toilets are marked on the map - so teams should be able to narrow down their location quickly.

All scouts will have to initially run south at Dropsite to exit the campground, before either continuing south/east or splitting off to the west. The scouts who run uphill to the west are unlikely to reach Boboyan Road unless they’re lighting fast (in Committee trial runs, even our fastest sprinter had to stop short). Scouts who head downhill to the south will quickly reach a sharp turn to the left and come across marshy, open terrain that will begin to slope upwards.

Hopefully, teams will locate themselves, head back to Boboyan Road, and then run north - let’s see what happens!
