Running on Stolen and Unceded Land: Inward Bound 2026
A contribution to the Traditional Owners of the Country we run on · 2026
What this is
Inward Bound takes place in some of the most amazing and beautiful parts of the bush near Canberra. For many runners, running Inward Bound means they develop a strong love and respect for these places. But each year Inward Bound also takes place on land that was stolen from First Nations Peoples, and is still unceded. We were inspired by grassroots collective Pay The Rent. Pay the Rent is organised by First Nations and non-First Nations people working together, as the Pay The Rent Grassroots Collective. This Collective is a national organisation based on the lands of the Kulin Nation in so-called Victoria, Australia. The idea to 'pay the rent' has been around for a very long time. Key principles of the Pay The Rent: These principles are taken from the Pay The Rent website, and are the principles that we have chosen to follow in our own approach to Paying the Rent: 1. Paying the Rent is about non-Indigenous people actively and practically honouring the Sovereignty of Aboriginal people; it is a way of giving back when living and benefiting on unceded and stolen land. 2. Rent is not charity. Rent is rent. 3. Aboriginal people should have control of any Rent received. 4. This model for Paying the Rent transfers money/wealth on a grassroots to grassroots basis; it doesn’t involve governments or big business. We consulted Indigenous leaders to choose a charity which would be appropriate. We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land we run on this year, the lands we have run on in previous years of Inward Bound, and we pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. We believe that we should recognise the traditional owners of the land we run. But, we also encourage all runners, spectators and supporters to think about their place in so-called Australia. To all it is possible for, Pay the Rent!
